Introduction to AI: Overview

What is AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) has existed for decades. The official definition from the Oxford English Dictionary (OED):

"The capacity of computers or other machines to exhibit or simulate intelligent behaviour."

Most conversation today focuses on generative artificial intelligence (genAI), defined by OED:

"Type of AI designed to produce output (text or images), previously thought to require human intelligence, typically by using machine learning to extrapolate from large collections of data."

GenAI tools rely on Large Language Model (LLM) technology:

"A complex algorithm that learns patterns from vast amounts of text to generate human-sounding responses to user prompts."

This guide focuses on genAI and LLM tools; it is up to the user to determine which is best for their purposes.

This guide also provides current resources on the constantly evolving discussions of AI in medicine.

KCU Policies and Notes

KCU does not have a university-wide policy about the use of AI tools in coursework and other written documents such as theses or dissertations. Each college has empowered instructors and advisors to set their own standards and communicate them to students.
