Embase: PICO Builder

KCU Libraries has added Embase to our database collection. Embase is a comprehensive biomedical database.

PICO Builder

The PICO search functionality lets you build queries based on the PICO framework of asking clinical questions. The search fields are broken down by components, Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome. Using this structure helps you to create a research question that will incorporate evidence-based practices into your query.

How to Use the PICO Builder Query

To begin, view the Default strategy drop down. It will be set to "/exp" which informs how the system will search for you. When using the default strategy, it will search your keywords and map them to Emtree terms for more streamlined searching.

You may start with the Population field and here you can see that Emtree will populate suggestions based on what is typed in:

The Intervention and Comparison fields will follow the same structure:

Then,

Use the Outcome field to assess risk or any other applicable term:

You may also specify the type of study design in the last field.

As you add terms and narrow your search, the results count will update based on what is in the database and what matches the query being ran.
